Here at Llanedeyrn Primary School we use the literacy scheme Read, Write, Inc. We follow the scheme Monday to Thursday from 9.15 a.m. to 10.15 a.m.
The scheme aims to have all children reading fluently by teaching them a proven synthetic phonics approach whereby they learn letter sounds before blending them together to read words. They also use this phonics based approach to undertake regular writing tasks.
From Reception to Year 4 pupils are taught Read, Write, Inc. Phonics. Following rigorous assessments, children in these year groups are taught in similar ability groups by trained adults. This ensures children are learning at the level they require.
Any pupils from Reception to Year 4 who, following the assessments, are identified as having a strong reading ability are then taught Read, Write, Inc. Comprehension. This teaches children how to apply their reading skills to decode more complex information.
Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 follow a separate scheme called Read, Write, Inc. Fresh Start. Again pupils are assessed and taught in similar ability groups by trained adults. This develops pupils’ reading and writing skills at the level they require.
Any Year 5 or Year 6 pupils who have a strong reading ability are taught Read, Write, Inc. Comprehension Plus. This ensures these pupils are sufficiently challenged to employ their reading skills to more complex texts, often working at a level beyond primary school.
The official Read Write Inc website, www.oup.com/oxed/primary/rwi/ provides all the information you need to support your child through the programme.
