Practical toolkit

Toolkit for Parents and Carers of Children with Additional Learning Needs

This toolkit gives practical information and prompts to help parents and carers understand, prepare for and take part in discussions about Additional Learning Needs.

What are Additional Learning Needs?

A pupil may have Additional Learning Needs if they need extra support to help them learn. This could be linked to communication, learning, social development, emotional wellbeing, physical needs or sensory needs.

Support is planned carefully so that pupils can access learning, develop confidence and make progress.

How we work with parents and carers

Parents and carers know their children best. We value working together so that support is clear, helpful and centred around the needs of the pupil.

  • We listen to parent and carer views.
  • We talk with pupils about what helps them learn.
  • We review progress and support carefully.
  • We work with other professionals when this is needed.
What should I do if I have a concern?

If you are worried about your child’s learning, progress or development, please speak to your child’s class teacher. They can talk through your concerns and explain what support is already in place.

If further support is needed, the school can arrange for you to speak with the Additional Learning Needs Coordinator.

Need to speak to someone?

If you have any questions about Additional Learning Needs or would like to discuss your child’s support, please contact the School Office and ask to speak to your child’s class teacher or the Additional Learning Needs Coordinator.
