Eco-Schools Bronze Award
Caring for our planet, starting in our School.
Eco-Schools Bronze Award
2024–2025
We are an Eco-Schools Bronze Award School
We have achieved the Eco-Schools Bronze Award for the actions we are taking to look after our School and our planet.
Our pupils, staff and families are working together to save energy, reduce waste and make our School grounds greener and more wildlife-friendly.
Bronze Award achieved – aiming for Silver nextEco-Schools is a global programme that helps children become confident, caring and active citizens. At Llanedeyrn Primary School we are using Eco-Schools to give our pupils a real voice and to make positive changes in everyday school life.
What is Eco-Schools?
Eco-Schools helps children to learn about the environment and to take action in their own School. Schools follow seven simple steps, including forming an Eco-Committee, carrying out an environmental review and creating an action plan.
- Pupils lead the work and share their ideas.
- Everyone learns how small changes can make a big difference.
- Schools can work towards Bronze, Silver and Green Flag awards.
How we achieved the Bronze Award
To achieve Bronze, we completed the first Eco-Schools steps together:
- Eco-Committee – pupils from different classes joined our Sustainability Squad to lead the work and share ideas.
- Environmental review – we looked carefully at areas such as energy, waste, litter, school grounds and transport to see what was going well and what needed to improve.
- Action plan – we chose key projects to focus on during the year and planned how to make them happen.
- Whole-school involvement – classes joined in with activities, assemblies and themed weeks.
Our Sustainability Squad keeps an eye on our progress and helps to remind everyone about our Eco-Schools promises.
What we have done so far
Here are some examples of the projects that have helped us achieve the Bronze Award:
- Energy – “Turn it down” checks in classrooms, lights and boards off when not needed and reminders to close doors.
- Waste – more recycling in classrooms and shared areas, and talking about re-using resources before throwing things away.
- School grounds – caring for our outdoor spaces, planting and looking after wildlife areas where possible.
- Learning – linking climate change and caring for the planet into class topics, assemblies and special events.
Most importantly, pupils are taking the lead by spotting problems, sharing ideas and encouraging others to join in.
How families can support our Eco-Schools work
Families are a big part of our Eco-Schools journey. You can help by:
- Talking with your child about the changes we are making in School.
- Encouraging simple actions at home such as switching off lights, sorting recycling and reducing waste.
- Walking, cycling or scooting to School where possible.
- Sharing any ideas or expertise you have that could support our future Eco-Schools projects.
Our next step – working towards the Silver Award
We are proud of our Bronze Award, but this is just the beginning. Our next goal is to achieve the Eco-Schools Silver Award.
To reach Silver, we plan to:
- Develop even more pupil-led projects through our Sustainability Squad.
- Strengthen links between Eco-Schools and our curriculum, including outdoor learning and STEM.
- Build on our work around energy saving, waste reduction and caring for nature in our School grounds.
- Share our progress regularly with families and the wider community.
Together, we want Llanedeyrn Primary School to be a place where caring for our world is part of everyday life.
Thank you for supporting our Eco-Schools journey
Every small change helps. By working together, we can make a big difference for our School, our community and our planet.
