Cymraeg Campus at Llanedeyrn Primary

We are a Cymraeg Campus Bronze School.

Recognised with the Bronze Award

We have been awarded the Cymraeg Campus Bronze Award for our work in growing a strong Welsh ethos across our School.

This means we are helping children to use more Welsh every day in class, on the yard and at home, and that our whole community values the Welsh language and culture.

About Cymraeg Campus

What is Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus?

Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus is a national programme that helps schools to use more Welsh in everyday life. It encourages everyone in the School community to take part, including pupils, staff, families and governors. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

The aim is to:

  • build a strong Welsh language ethos around the School
  • give children lots of fun, meaningful chances to speak Welsh
  • increase the social use of Welsh, not just in lessons but in real life situations
  • work together towards Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
What does the Bronze Award mean?
+

The Bronze Award shows that we have made a strong start on our Cymraeg Campus journey. In a Bronze school:

  • there is a clear Welsh feel around the School, with bilingual displays and signs
  • learners begin to understand and respect the language and culture of Wales
  • children are starting to use Welsh in different situations in their classrooms and on the yard
  • there is a regular Welsh assembly, supported by the Criw Cymraeg
  • apps, websites and digital tools are used to help children enjoy learning Welsh
  • most children have a positive attitude towards learning Welsh.
What have we done at Llanedeyrn to earn Bronze?
+

To achieve the Bronze Award we worked together on lots of Welsh activities across the School. Some of these include:

  • creating Welsh displays in every classroom and shared area
  • adding more bilingual signs and Welsh welcome posters around the building
  • holding a Croeso poster competition and a writing competition about why it is special to speak Welsh
  • setting up a clear display to show our progress with each Cymraeg Campus target
  • sharing news about Welsh activities on newsletters, the website and Class Dojo
  • running regular Welsh assemblies with songs, prayers and language patterns
  • using Welsh games in class and on the yard to practise classroom language
  • using Welsh apps and online books such as Magi Ann, Tric a Chlic and Campau Cosmig
  • holding an e-Steddfod and other special Welsh events across the year
  • giving children chances to use Welsh in real life situations, such as buying items or ordering food.
Who are our Criw Cymraeg?
+

Our Criw Cymraeg is a team of pupil language champions from different year groups. They help to lead Cymraeg Campus in our School.

They:

  • meet regularly with staff to check our progress and plan new ideas
  • help to look after our Cymraeg Campus displays
  • lead parts of our Welsh assemblies and share the phrase of the fortnight
  • give out Welsh rewards and stickers during special events
  • support classes to use more Welsh games, apps and songs
  • share updates with the School Council and families.
How can children use more Welsh every day?
+

Every pupil can help us to keep our Bronze Award and move towards Silver by using Welsh as much as possible. Here are some simple ideas based on our Cymraeg Campus targets.

  • greet friends and adults in Welsh, for example “Bore da” and “Prynhawn da”
  • use Welsh manners such as “Os gwelwch yn dda” and “Diolch” in class and in the dinner hall
  • join in with the focus phrase of the week in lessons and on the yard
  • take part in Welsh games at playtime and in PE warm ups
  • listen to and sing along with Welsh songs and rhymes
  • choose Welsh books, programmes or apps when they can
  • teach a family member a new Welsh word or sentence and use it at home.
What happens next – our journey to Silver
+

We are now working towards the Silver (Arian) Award. To reach Silver, Welsh needs to be even more visible in our School, used more confidently by learners and staff, and celebrated through a wider range of activities.

Our next steps include:

  • adding more Welsh to classroom displays and around the School
  • giving the Criw Cymraeg an even bigger role in leading assemblies and events
  • using more digital tools to record and share Welsh speaking
  • planning extra Welsh enrichment activities, clubs and visits
  • continuing to support all learners to feel confident and proud to use Welsh.
